Getting to Ballycastle

Ballycastle sits on the north Antrim coast, about an hour and a half’s drive from Belfast via the A26 and A44, or via the Causeway Coastal Route (A2) if you’re coming from Larne or already touring the coast — slower, but the more scenic option by far.

Ulsterbus services connect Ballycastle to Belfast and to Ballymena, with onward connections along the coast road through Bushmills and past the Giant’s Causeway.

On to Rathlin Island

The passenger ferry to Rathlin Island runs daily, year-round, from Ballycastle’s harbour — around 25 minutes on the fast boat, or about 40 minutes on the slower crossing, which also takes cars by arrangement. Check current timetables directly before travelling, especially outside summer, since sailings reduce in winter and can be affected by weather.

The Kintyre Express runs a seasonal passenger ferry from Ballycastle to Campbeltown, typically April to September.
